Montrose

Montrose is a neighborhood with a rich history, tracing its roots back to the early 20th century. Named after Montrose, Angus, Scotland, it was initially intended to be a planned community and a suburb facilitated by streetcar. The neighborhood's original vision was led by developer J.W. Link and his Houston Land Corporation who imagined Montrose as a "grand residential addition". Montrose's design included expansive, well-landscaped boulevards and high-quality curbing. Link himself resided in Montrose in the Link-Lee Mansion, which is now a part of the University of St. Thomas campus.

In 1926, Montrose Boulevard welcomed Houston's first apartment hotel, the Plaza Apartment Hotel, which hosted many of Houston's elite, including Rice University's first president, Edgar Odell Lovett. The stylish hotel, modeled after New York's Ritz-Carlton, was built at a cost of over a million dollars. Originally, the neighborhood was purely residential until 1936, when the lapse of deed restrictions opened the door to commercial development.

Montrose transformed into a hotspot for counterculture during the '60s and '70s, offering a home to street musicians, alternative community centers, artisans' studios, and more. The neighborhood was also a haven for folk, psychedelic rock, and blues music with venues like Anderson Fair and Sand Mountain. In the late '70s and early '80s, punk and new wave clubs such as The Paradise Rock Island, the Omni, and Numbers also found their place in Montrose.

Today, Montrose has seen a breath of new life with remodeled and new homes, high-end boutiques, and restaurants. However, it retains its unique bohemian charm, making it a beautifully eclectic part of Houston.
