Most people who sit down with Chelsea Gartner, Greymark's Interior Designer, fall somewhere on a wide spectrum of readiness. On one end is the homeowner with a meticulously curated inspiration board, specific opinions about cabinet door styles, and a clear sense of what they want. On the other is the person who walks in and says some version of "I just want it to look good."

Chelsea works across that spectrum every week, and she is effective at every point along it for the same reason: her job is not to impose a vision, it is to find yours.

The Design Work That Happens Before You Walk In

Before your first meeting, Chelsea has already been working. She researches, sources, and curates options so that when you sit down together, you are not starting from scratch in front of an overwhelming field of choices.

"My goal is to do the research, sourcing, and coordination behind the scenes so clients aren't starting from scratch," she says. "Most clients don't realize how much time and stress that saves until they're going through the process."

She also has access to spaces that are only open to professionals. Trade-only showrooms, manufacturer relationships, and professional pricing are not available to homeowners shopping retail. More practically, Chelsea brings working knowledge that retail showrooms cannot replicate. A material might look beautiful in a sample, but whether it is right for how that space will actually be used is a different question entirely.

"I wouldn't typically recommend marble flooring in a high-traffic mudroom," she says, "unless the homeowner is comfortable with the natural wear and maintenance that comes with it."

The same logic applies to countertops, backsplash, and every selection. Beautiful and right for your home are not always the same thing. She also helps clients understand where their budget will have the most impact. A natural stone mosaic tile can run $30 to $150 per square foot, which might make it perfect as a shower floor feature but impractical as the primary material throughout an entire bathroom.

Understanding where to invest, and where a less expensive choice will perform just as well visually, is part of what you are paying for during the design process.

How Chelsea Helps You Discover Your Interior Design Style

"Most people think they don't have a style," she says, "but almost everyone knows what they don't like. That's usually where I start." From there, the conversation moves away from design terminology and toward the way you actually live, which Chelsea discovers through questions like:

·      What frustrates you about it now?

·      Do you prefer bold colors or neutrals?

·      Do you want rooms that feel calm and collected, or spaces with more personality?

"Once we get into those conversations," Chelsea says, "patterns start to emerge, and it becomes much easier to identify what they're really looking for."

The goal is not to assign you a style category. People tend to have stronger opinions than they give themselves credit for, Chelsea has found. They just have not always been asked the right questions yet.

When You Already Have a Vision, Chelsea's Job Is to Refine It

A detailed inspiration board is a gift, and Chelsea treats it that way. When a client arrives with a clear vision, her role is to find the common thread in what they are showing her and bring it to life in a way that actually works for their home.

"It's their home, not mine," she says. "My job is to guide the vision, refine it, and make sure it translates successfully into the finished space." That distinction matters. A Greymark project will always reflect the homeowner's priorities, not Chelsea's personal preferences.

Where professional design expertise becomes essential, and this is the real difference between interior design and interior decorating, is in the gap between inspiration and reality.

Decorating is about the surface. Design means understanding structure, scale, what materials will actually hold up, and what the space can realistically become given its footprint and budget. A Pinterest kitchen might have a massive island, a butler's pantry, and a wine room. The client's actual home might have a completely different footprint.

"In those situations," Chelsea explains, "I look for the elements they're really responding to, whether that's the mood, the materials, the functionality, or the architectural details, and find ways to achieve a similar feeling within the realities of their space and budget."

What a Pinterest Board Actually Does

"I'm looking for patterns," Chelsea says, explaining why inspiration collections like Pinterest boards matter.

Whether a board is tightly curated or pulls from a dozen different directions, she can find what she needs in either, because what she looks for goes well beneath the surface images. If every kitchen in a client's board has floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, that tells her something. If multiple bathrooms feature walk-in pantries and custom storage systems, organization is almost certainly a priority.

"Sometimes clients communicate their priorities more clearly through images than words," she says.

Her advice for making the first meeting as useful as possible is specific: "Be honest about your hard no's. Knowing what a client strongly dislikes is just as valuable as knowing what they love."

What Gets Decided Before Construction Begins

The selections meeting is where the design becomes buildable. By the time it happens, Chelsea has already had multiple conversations about style, goals, and priorities. She presents curated options across tile, countertops, flooring, paint, plumbing fixtures, hardware, lighting, wallpaper, and more. Clients can see and touch samples, compare options side by side, and understand how everything works together as a complete design.

Some decisions need to happen early for reasons that are not immediately obvious. Appliances, plumbing fixtures, and lighting all affect cabinet layouts, electrical plans, and plumbing locations, and many of these items carry significant lead times. Custom or semi-custom cabinetry, specialty fixtures, and certain tile lines can take weeks or months to arrive once ordered.

Making those selections before construction starts means the materials are ready when the project needs them, rather than creating delays mid-build waiting on something that should have been ordered at the beginning. Finalizing flooring, tile, and countertops before construction also matters because these selections vary significantly in price and making them early allows for a more accurate scope and budget.

Changes after construction starts are always possible, but they almost always add both time and cost. Investing extra time in the planning phase is where Chelsea puts in her most important work on your behalf.
