When to Start Your Houston Remodel: Working Backwards from the Date That Matters
Most people start thinking seriously about a home remodel when they have a specific date in mind: a baby due in spring, a holiday gathering they want a finished kitchen for, a move-in date circled on the calendar. The question that follows is almost always the same, and it's the right one to ask early: do I have enough time?
The honest answer depends on what you're doing. Here is the math.
For a kitchen done before the holidays, here is what you are actually looking at. A kitchen remodel takes at least three months of construction once the crew is on site. Before that, the design phase covers floor plans, material and fixture selections, Trade Day, and permitting, and that process takes at least fifteen weeks, with permitting alone adding another one to three months.
Add it up and the minimum from first conversation to finished kitchen is seven to eight months. For Thanksgiving or December, the design conversation needs to start no later than April or May. If you are reading this in summer and hoping for the current holiday season, every week you wait matters.
For a home addition before a baby arrives, the timeline is longer. Additions take at least eight months of construction on site, plus the full design and permitting process. The total runs twelve to fifteen months or more. A baby due in spring means the design conversation needed to start many months ago, but starting now still preserves options that waiting another month would close off.
The sooner the process begins, the more the schedule can work in your favor.
For a whole-house renovation before a move-in date, you have one real advantage: you are not living through the construction. Whole-house renovations take at least six months on site. Add the design phase and you are planning for nine to twelve months minimum. The earlier the design process starts, the more control you have over when it ends.

William Polito, Greymark's Project Manager, is direct about what actually creates delays. "Weather, scope changes, and the fact that we are all people, including trades," he says. "Life happens, and even with excellent planning, things happen." Material delays round out the list.
The scope change piece deserves its own explanation because it catches homeowners off guard more than anything else. Most understand the term "change order" but fewer understand what qualifies as one. When something comes up during construction that falls outside the original scope, Greymark's project managers walk homeowners through exactly what that means: why it qualifies as a change order, how the process works, and what the implications are for both cost and timeline.
A change that feels minor in the moment can have a real ripple effect on both.
What the Greymark design process protects against is this dynamic surfacing during construction at all. When decisions happen before work begins rather than after, the "while you're at it, can you just..." conversation takes place in design, where it can be evaluated and priced cleanly, instead of on site, where it interrupts a schedule already in motion.

There is a question that comes up in every significant remodel, and most homeowners do not think through it until they are already in the process: where are you going to live?
Kelly Kirk, Greymark's Owner and President, is honest with every client about this from the start. "Living in a construction zone is really stressful and difficult," she says, "and in some cases it is not possible at all."
The challenge is not just the inconvenience of displaced routines. Being in the middle of a project means experiencing it at its most disrupted before it starts looking like anything good, and that stretch can make an already significant undertaking feel overwhelming in ways that are hard to anticipate from the outside. Whenever clients can arrange to stay somewhere else, Kelly recommends it.
For families with young children or anyone with health sensitivities, moving out is especially important. Construction involves dust, noise, and materials that are not meant to coexist with everyday living, and the safest option is not to try.
For major kitchen and whole-house renovations, we recommend that clients move out. Additions almost always require it.
For homeowners who stay, Greymark sets up a temporary kitchen during the pre-construction process, typically by relocating the refrigerator and microwave to another room and using small appliances in place of the range. It is manageable for more contained projects, but it is a real adjustment and worth planning around honestly rather than assuming it will be fine.
For homeowners who move out, options range from short-term apartment leases to Airbnb or VRBO to staying with family. One thing worth knowing regardless of where you go: when you move your belongings to storage, take everything from the house, even from rooms that are only getting paint. Dust and disruption travel further through a home during construction than most people expect. If you need help with housing or storage recommendations, Greymark can connect you.

The first step is a conversation with Kelly, where she talks through the project, the location, and the budget before anything else, getting a clear sense of whether the scope and the timing are a realistic fit on both sides. If everything aligns, she sets up the formal meeting that starts the design process.
That conversation does not require a decision. What it gives you is a clear picture of whether your date is achievable and what it would actually take to get there. For anyone planning around a deadline that matters, that clarity is worth getting sooner rather than later.
